Labor Shortage in Quebec's Manufacturing Sector

An article published in lapresse+ presents the paradox of a Quebec manufacturing market that is seeing strong expansion but whose growth could be slowed by a labor shortage exceeding 20% in some Quebec SMEs.

Labor Shortage in Quebec's Manufacturing Sector

Although a majority of industrial SMEs in Quebec posted revenue growth over the past two years, manufacturing momentum could be slowed by the labor shortage.

Jean-Philippe Décarie's article "A shortage leading to stagnation" published in this morning's LaPresse+ shares the statistics on the share of unfilled positions in manufacturing companies:

  • 10% in companies with between 100 and 500 employees
  • 21% in companies with 10 to 20 employees

According to an annual survey by Sous-traitance industrielle Québec (STIQ) of 500 out of 2,700 SMEs with 10 to 500 employees, 75% of SMEs say they suffer from a lack of new talent coming through. This prevents manufacturers from developing new markets and puts their future competitiveness at risk.

"They don't have enough employees to take on new contracts, while they already have their hands full meeting orders from their current customers.

So they decide to prioritize their most important customers. For them it's a strategic choice. Business development is over; let's focus on delivering what's already planned for those who give us the most work."
